Worayur - Trichy.

 This temple is one of the most important places of visit in South India, Woraiyur (in Trichy) – Old city, capital of Cholan Dynasity, Cholazan Dysnasty’s 9 states, It has different names: Woraiyur, Uradhai, Kholi, Varanam, Mokhisvaram, Varapuri, Oorshirappu

As per the history when a village is established the practice was also the establish a Goddess to protect the Village, As per that culture the goddess who was the chosen one was Vekkali Amman. Goddesses possessing powers’ of Courage & Victory are normally established facing north in all the temples, practice was the kings used to take the blessings of the goddesses and return back victorious from their wars. Historical books state that these goddess are normally found without shelter in the temples, There is also another temple in thirupara kundram near Madurai called “VeyyilUhandaKali”. 

There was a Sage called “Sarama Munivar” who had a garden with lot of flowers’ with variety, who use to make garlands from those Chevandhi Flowers’ from that garden, and dedicate it to another “Sage” called THAIYUMMANAVAR who used to stay in the north of Mailaikotai. There was a flower merchant who went ahead and started stealing those flowers’ from that garden and used to give it to the king in return of some gift, King was also greedy in spite of knowing that the flowers’ were offered to the Sage he had ordered the flower merchant deliver flowers’ at the palace. 

One day Sarama Munivar caught the flower merchant stealing the flowers’, on getting know where the flowers’ were taken, he approached the King with a distress of this unacceptable act, he was unheard by the king so he had to complain to the sage (THAIYUMMANAVAR), THAIYUMMANAVAR disappointed turned towards north ( urayur) – with a violent, destructive sight. which resulted in Sand Storm covering the whole town, all citizens had decided there is no one else to protect them other than the goddess Vekkali, Goddess stopped to Sand Storm but the citizens lost there Shelter, As per the history Vekkali stated to the citizens that she shall also not have a roof over her till time each one the citezens get shelter, even today there are many who don’t have shelter in the village if Woraiyur (in Trichy), that’s the reason even today Vekkali is as the same as she was as per she had stated without a roof overhead. 

This might just read like a story, but all that it depicts is the kindness of the mother – tell me which mother will not show kindness to her offspring’s when her offspring’s’ are in trouble?  

This history might have got established only to prove the importance of love, intelligence, and wisdom.
